Helen Chiang has departed from her position as Xbox’s first chief operating officer just three months after her appointment. The announcement came via an internal memo from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who expressed gratitude for Chiang’s service and confirmed that her responsibilities will be redistributed among other leaders within the organization.
Chiang, who spent 21 years at Microsoft, previously led the Minecraft franchise before being named COO in July 2023. The role was created during a restructuring effort aimed at consolidating Xbox’s operations. At the time of her promotion, Sharma described the COO position as essential for aligning decision-making across content, hardware, platform, and services.
The precise reasons for Chiang’s departure remain unclear. Microsoft has not provided specific comments regarding her exit, stating through Kari Perez, Xbox’s VP of Communications, that they do not discuss individual personnel matters.
Concerns within the company have been mounting as further layoffs are anticipated. Rumors suggest that Xbox may be preparing to cut thousands of jobs, with a total of approximately 3,200 roles reportedly affected this fiscal year. The company is facing challenges that have led to the restructuring, including organizational fragmentation as it integrates new team members and projects.
Industry speculation has increased following Chiang’s abrupt exit, particularly as Xbox makes various leadership adjustments amid these ongoing challenges. CEO Asha Sharma indicated that updates regarding the COO role will be shared once finalized.
