Hindustan Zinc’s artistic and social empowerment initiatives reaffirm its role as a pioneer in sustainable development, cultural preservation, and inclusive growth.

Preserving India’s Artistic Legacy through Community Empowerment

Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), a Vedanta Group company and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has emerged as a driving force in India’s cultural revival. Beyond metals, the company is fostering heritage conservation through inclusive and sustainable initiatives. Grounded in the philosophy that art and culture serve as vehicles for social transformation, Hindustan Zinc has made significant investments in reviving traditional art forms such as Ajrakh block printing, tribal Gavri dance, and the classical rhythms of the Pakhavaj.

These initiatives are not isolated cultural projects but are part of a larger framework that combines heritage conservation with income generation, ensuring that communities benefit both economically and culturally.

Empowering Artisans through Skill Development and Livelihood Generation

In collaboration with artisan groups and NGOs, Hindustan Zinc has established a traditional block printing unit in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The facility currently employs 18 women trained in heritage textile techniques. The initiative, part of the company’s broader mission, also supports the Ajrakh printing revival and contributes to Hindustan Zinc’s own sustainable clothing brand, Upaya.

Upaya not only markets handcrafted textiles but also represents a deeper commitment to empowering rural artisans—especially women—by providing them with vocational skills, economic opportunities, and social dignity.

“Bringing our traditional art to life with my own hands fills me with pride. Being part of this initiative has not only taught me a skill but also helped me stand on my own feet,” shared Sharmila, a trainee at the Sakhi block printing unit.

Nurturing Performing Arts and Cultural Identity

Through large-scale cultural platforms such as the Vedanta Udaipur World Music Festival, Hindustan Zinc brings together artists across genres—from folk and classical to fusion and contemporary. These festivals are more than just entertainment—they serve to reinvigorate Rajasthan’s cultural identity and bring attention to endangered musical instruments and traditions.

Projects like Srajan – The Spark offer global exposure to Indian art, while Smritiyaan, a tribute to tabla maestro Pandit Chatur Lal, preserves classical music legacies for future generations. In 2025, the company hosted Sakhi Utsav in multiple locations including Zawar, Rampura Agucha, Chanderiya, Dariba, and Pantnagar, engaging over 7,000 women through performances, wellness sessions, sports activities, and financial literacy workshops.

Driving Social Change Through Grassroots Engagement

Hindustan Zinc’s long-standing ‘Uthori’ campaign, launched in 2021, uses nukkad nataks (street plays) and interactive roadshows to address crucial social issues like menstrual hygiene, domestic violence, and child marriage. This initiative has reached over 11,000 students across 180 schools, promoting awareness and dialogue in underserved communities.

Through its Sakhi initiative, the company has supported over 2,000 self-help groups (SHGs) in 200 villages, directly empowering more than 25,000 rural and tribal women with leadership training, entrepreneurship development, and financial literacy.

These efforts are part of Hindustan Zinc’s holistic CSR strategy, which spans across education, healthcare, sanitation, nutrition, skill development, sports, and culture. The company has positively impacted over 2 million lives across 4,000 villages, underscoring its commitment to social transformation at scale.

Leading Sustainability and Social Impact in the Global Mining Sector

Hindustan Zinc is not only a leader in resource production but also a benchmark for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) excellence. It has been named the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the second consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024.

The company launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc brand, boasting a carbon footprint 75% below the global average. With a 2.41 times Water-Positive certification and a target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050, Hindustan Zinc is pioneering an energy transition metals ecosystem essential for a sustainable future.

With an expansive social footprint, the company has transformed the lives of 2.3 million people, earning its place among India’s Top 10 CSR companies.
