New Delhi, 1 September (Udaipur Kiran). Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is reportedly exploring partnerships with rival tech giants Google and OpenAI to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities within its apps, according to a report by The Information.
Leaders at Meta’s recently formed AI division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, have considered integrating Google’s Gemini model to provide advanced conversational and text-based responses for users interacting with Meta AI, the company’s main chatbot. The discussions also extend to using OpenAI’s models to power Meta AI and various AI features across Meta’s social media platforms.
According to The Information, any deals with external AI model providers such as Google or OpenAI are expected to be temporary measures, aimed at improving Meta’s AI products until its proprietary models—such as the upcoming Llama 5—are ready to compete at the highest level.
Internal Use of Third-Party AI Models
The report further reveals that Meta has already begun using external AI models internally. For example, some employees can access Anthropic models through the company’s internal coding assistant, helping them streamline coding tasks.
A Meta spokesperson commented, “We are taking an all-of-the-above approach to building the best AI products; and that includes building world-leading models ourselves, partnering with companies, as well as open sourcing technology.”
Attracting Top AI Talent
Earlier this year, Meta invested billions of dollars in its AI ambitions, recruiting high-profile leaders such as former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman to co-lead Meta Superintelligence Labs. The company has also offered generous compensation packages to attract top AI researchers worldwide.
OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft—OpenAI’s main backer—did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
