Udaipur, 23 October 2025 (Udaipur Kiran): Excitement is building as the countdown begins for the World’s Deepest Marathon, set to take place 1,120 metres below sea level inside Boliden’s Garpenberg zinc mine in Sweden — one of the world’s most advanced mining facilities. The event, organised by BecomingX, ICMM and Boliden, will mark two official Guinness World Record attempts: the Deepest Marathon and the Deepest Underground Marathon Distance Run (Team).

Hindustan Zinc (NSE: HINDZINC), the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and among the top five silver producers globally, is the official partner for the event. A teaser film has already been released to offer a glimpse into this extraordinary challenge.
On October 25, sixty runners from 18 countries — including CEOs, mining leaders, charity workers and amateurs — will test their endurance and mental strength in an environment few have ever experienced. Together, they aim to raise USD 1 million for charity.
Representing Hindustan Zinc at the event will be Mr. Arun Misra (CEO) and Mr. Kishore S (COO), who will join global industry leaders in this record-breaking challenge.
Mr. Arun Misra said, “At Hindustan Zinc, we believe true strength lies in challenging limits — whether in human potential, safety excellence or technological innovation. The World’s Deepest Marathon reflects the perseverance and progress that define modern mining. I am personally thrilled to join my peers in this remarkable run — a symbol of unity, resilience and a shared commitment to redefining the future of mining.”
Hindustan Zinc’s participation in this event aligns with its broader commitment to sports, fitness and community well-being. Earlier this year, the company successfully hosted the Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon in Udaipur, drawing over 7,000 participants to promote fitness and the cause of #RunForZeroHunger by Nandghar, an Anil Agarwal Foundation initiative.
Through programs such as the Zinc Football Academy (AIFF 3-Star Accredited), Zinc Football Girls Academy, and the AIFF Zinc Blue Cubs League, Hindustan Zinc continues to nurture grassroots sports talent, empowering young athletes — especially girls — and fostering community development through sports.
Paul Gurney, CEO of BecomingX, said, “The World’s Deepest Marathon is more than just a run. It’s about pushing human potential beyond ordinary limits, highlighting the innovation and safety that define the modern mining industry.”
ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan added, “Running a full marathon in a working underground mine demonstrates how far our industry has come in safety and innovation. This event celebrates resilience and responsible mining practices.”
Ultra-marathon coach and nine-time Guinness World Record holder Rory Coleman remarked, “I’ve run all over the world — but never in it. Running a marathon over a thousand metres below the surface is going to be one of the toughest challenges participants will ever face.”
With this partnership, Hindustan Zinc reinforces its commitment to global collaboration, sustainability, and the spirit of endurance — both above and below the ground.
