Pioneering Water Stewardship in a Water-Stressed Region

Operating in the arid regions of Rajasthan—one of India’s most water-scarce states—Hindustan Zinc has reinforced its leadership in water conservation by maintaining a strict Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) policy. The company treats, recycles, and reuses all process water and effluents, significantly reducing its dependency on freshwater sources while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

“At Hindustan Zinc, water is not just a resource—it’s a shared legacy,” said Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Limited. “Being 3.32 times water positive is a testament to our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. Through proactive initiatives such as water replenishment, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement, we are building resilience for a better future.”

Ambitious 2030 Sustainability Roadmap Announced

In tandem with this achievement, the company unveiled its 2030 Sustainability Goals, focusing on multiple themes such as:

  • Climate Action

  • Water Stewardship

  • Biodiversity Conservation

  • Workplace Health & Safety

  • Responsible Sourcing

  • Circular Economy

  • Diversity in Workforce

  • Social Performance

A standout commitment is Hindustan Zinc’s pledge to reduce freshwater consumption by 50% by 2030, based on 2020 levels. Furthermore, the company aims to source 100% low-quality water for all smelting operations—thereby preserving high-quality water for local communities.

Planting the Seeds of a Greener Tomorrow

To commemorate World Environment Day, the company launched a massive plantation drive, with a target to plant over 1.5 lakh saplings across its operational areas in 2025. This initiative builds on its broader commitment to ecological restoration and environmental stewardship.

Additionally, Hindustan Zinc hosted a week-long series of community-focused events, including:

  • Environmental quizzes and awareness campaigns

  • Sapling distribution drives

  • “Waste to Wealth” and “Resource Revival Challenge” competitions

  • Eco-friendly cricket tournaments

These activities aimed to promote sustainable practices and climate-conscious thinking among employees and the broader community.

Setting New Industry Benchmarks

Hindustan Zinc continues to lead sustainability efforts within India’s metals and mining sector. It was the first Indian company in the sector to validate Science Based Targets (SBTi) aligned with the 1.5°C global climate target. Its Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) offer transparency into product lifecycle impacts, while the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) recently awarded the company an A- Leadership Band for outstanding water security and climate action in FY23.

With its holistic, forward-looking approach, Hindustan Zinc is not just meeting global sustainability standards—it’s helping define them for the future of responsible resource management.
